Why it exists

Someone looking at 10pm on a Sunday can’t ring anyone. A rough figure there and then helps them make up their mind, go with you and give you a call.

I’m a quantity surveyor, so I’m always chasing quotes myself, and that’s what gave me the idea. People want an answer straight away. Most roofing websites end in a contact form and a wait. Firstprice gives the homeowner a sensible starting figure from your own prices, and gives you an enquiry from someone who already knows roughly what the job costs.

How it works

Three questions for the homeowner. One proper enquiry for you.

  1. 1

    Pick the job

A few taps: a felt flat roof replacement on a garage, say, or a re-roof in concrete tiles. Repairs, replacements and new roofs are all covered.

  2. 2

    Set the size

A simple m² slider. Not sure of the size? They can say so, and the enquiry comes to you for a review instead of a guessed price.

  3. 3

    Type the extras

If there’s a chimney stack to flash or a Velux, they just type it in. It’s picked up and priced into the estimate from your rates. Awkward access has its own question.

They see a figure. You get the enquiry.

The homeowner gets a personalised estimate for their own roof within two minutes. You get their name, contact details and the job details straight away, so you can follow up knowing the figure they’ve already seen.

You choose whether people see the price first or leave their details first, separately for repairs, replacements and new roofs.

Try it yourself

This is the real tool.

It’s running here exactly as it would on your homepage, with example rates. Go through it as a homeowner would.

  • Choose Replacement, Pitched and Tile, then drag the size to about 85 m².
  • In the notes, type chimney stack and a Velux and watch them get picked up.
  • Switch to Flat and Felt at 18 m² for a garage roof.

See it with your name and colour

Nothing you type in the demo is sent anywhere. On your site, the enquiry comes to you.

Your rates. Nothing made up.

Every figure comes from prices you give us.

You send your rates once: what you charge per m² fitted for each covering, plus your allowances for chimneys, roof windows, access and your minimum job. Change them whenever you like. The estimate is only ever built from those numbers.

Checked against your past jobs first. Before it goes live, we put ten of your real quotes through it. If the range is wrong, you’ll see it on paper, not from a customer.

Where you’d use it

It sits on the site you’ve already got.

Your company name and your colours. However your website was built, we’ll help you get it on.

On your homepage

As a section of the page, so the first thing a visitor can do is get a figure.

Next to your enquiry button

A “Get an instant quote” button beside your contact button. It opens the tool over the page.

On your service pages

On the flat roofs page or the re-roofs page, where people are already reading about that job.

Short videos

See it from the homeowner’s side.

Marketing versions with made-up names and figures. No sound needed.

Being developed

Measuring the roof on a map, from a phone.

We’re developing satellite mapping, so customers will be able to measure the m² from their phone inside the tool. Until it’s ready, the slider does the job, and anyone who isn’t sure of the size can still send you the enquiry.

Questions

The things contractors ask first.

Do I need a new website?

No. It goes on the website you already have, as a box on a page or a button that opens it. We’ll help you add it, whoever built your site.

Is the estimate a fixed quote?

No. It’s a guide range built from your rates, and it says so. You still survey the roof and confirm your price, the same as now. The difference is the homeowner already has a sensible idea of the cost when you ring them.

Where do the prices come from?

Only from the rates you give us: your price per m² for each covering, and your allowances for things like chimneys, roof windows and difficult access. We don’t use national averages or anyone else’s figures.

What do I get when someone uses it?

Their name, contact details and the job details straight away: the type of job, roof shape, covering, size, anything they typed in the notes, and the figure they were shown.

Can people see a price before leaving their details?

Your choice. Set price first or details first, separately for repairs, replacements and new roofs.

What if the job is unusual?

If someone mentions asbestos, a listed building or signs of structural damage, the tool doesn’t guess. It tells them a survey is needed and passes the enquiry to you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Most people looking for a roofer are on their phone, so that’s what it was designed for first.

I’m offering it to a few contractors first.

No pressure. If you’d like it on your website, or want to see how it would work with your own prices, drop me an email.
